BIO – Yi Liu

FILMMAKER BIO

Yi Liu is a Taiwanese American film director/screenwriter/cinematographer who currently resides in Taipei City, Taiwan. He graduated from National Taiwan University in 2012 majoring in the department of Theatre and Drama, where he studied directing, acting and lighting design. His experience in theatre gave him a strong sense in storytelling as he transitioned to film. In 2014, his short film D-DAY got him accepted into the Directing/Screenwriting MFA program of Columbia University.

During his studies in Columbia, Yi directed and wrote several films. His directing works include, Happy Mask, Snap and Ping Pong Coach which won him the Student Visionary Award at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival. His Thesis Film, Chi: The Method of Breathing is an official selection for the 2018 Taipei Golden Horse Film Festival. Chi: The Method of Breathing is currently being developed as an emerging IP and has won the FPP MME Creative Award and the Content Digital Film Award at the 2019 Taipei Golden Horse FPP.

After graduating from Columbia in 2018, Yi is working as a freelance director, screenwriter, cinematographer and editor for film and TV.
